|This USA/CA Boundary Monument 178 is at the Most Northeastern Point in the contiguous United States, the Most Northern Point being at Angle Inlet, MI. It sits in the small "Parc de La Frontiere" in Escourt Station, ME (a dot of a village at the northern tip of Maine), straddling the border with Quebec's village of Estcourt at the south end of Lac Pohenegamook. The Most Northeastern Point is actually 30 meters north of the Monument, in the middle of the Saint Francis River.|
This particular Monument, considered very important because of its location, is the original cast iron, five and a half foot high type. There are only eleven of this type among all the USA/CA border monuments.
You can drive to this extreme point only from the Quebec side without the hassle of going through customs. The small park has the only international foot bridge linking ME/QC (restored for historical purposes). Numerous plaques recall the historical significance of this location.
The few homes in the village actually straddle the Border, and they are the only American homes to have the Canadian area code with mail delivery from Canada. They pay taxes to both countries.
