This point might be more accurately called the "180 Degree Meridian High Point", but that does not have a very catchy ring to it. The international Date Line generally follows this meridian, and in Antarctica they coincide, to the extent that there is a date line that far south. Either line you use--the straight 180 degree meridian, or the date line with its jogs to avoid land--it is mostly over the vast watery expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Antarctica is a very high continent, and the high point is not far from the South Pole, on the huge icecap that forms the bulk of the frozen continent. |
