White Mountain is the highest peak in the vast Salmon River Mountains. Note that the USGS maps show the "White Mountain" label in the wrong place, on a lower eastern sub-peak. Clearly, this higher peak, with its lighter-colored rock, was always the intended peak for the "White Mountain" name. The U.S. Board of Geographic Names finally and officially fixed this error in 2021.
The sub-peak, where the old USGS maps still show the White Mountain label, is now called "White Mountain-East Peak" on this site. |
