| Little Moose Mountain (formerly known as Little Squaw Mountain on the USGS maps) is a small range of peaks running in a NE direction to Moosehead Lake and found southeast of the larger Big Moose Mountain Range. The squaw names have since been changed to "Moose" in the region. Their are numerous peaks and subpeaks along this mountain range all with very similar elevations; but they are separated by several miles. A taller peak around 4 miles southwest (by Notch Ponds) is not mapped by the USGS with an assigned top elevation but excedes the 2,200 contour and would be the true peak of this range (will place this peak in as Little Moose Mountain - west peak).
The next nighest nearest neighbor is the West Peak of Little Moose Moutain at EL 2,220 and the three sub peaks just east of the true peak at ELs 2,160 and 2,180(both without USGS BM ELs. The third subpeak in this area does have an established USGS elevation of 2,126 which the local trail books (by Christopher Keene) shows as the Little Moose Mtn. Peak. The 2,126 is not the true peak of the Little Moose Mountain Range as three other peaks NE and NW of that subpeak in Little Notch Pond area that are clearly taller. The east peak is thus, at least the 4th tallest peak in the range, but needs to be indicated separately since it is part of a commmon trail system used off of SR ME15/6 and it is separated from the other peaks by several miles and has its own substantial prominence and geologic features of interest.
The lowest saddle along the many ridges between them is just SE of Big Squaw Pond and the Elevation of that saddle is 1,620 plus. Interpolating would give a reasonable estimate of the saddle peak at 1,630 (plus or minus 5 feet) |
