Sonora Peak is only a couple miles north of Highway 108 at Sonora Pass, and this access helps make the summit an easy hike. Unlike the granite peaks for which the Sierra Nevada is famous, Sonora Peak is a pile of rotten volcanic scree. It is the highest point in Alpine County, California, and there is no higher summit further north in the Sierra.
