Ontake-san is the second highest volcano in Japan. Unlike the higher Fuji-san, it is not particularly conical in form, and it is located much further west, farther from Tokyo. It is the 12th highest peak in Japan.

in September, 2014, Ontake-san erupted without warning and 48 hikers near the summit were killed.
