List DescriptionThere are 22 interstate highways in the USA with a length of over 600 miles—in order, this is a list of the numbers of these routes:
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 29, 35, 40, 44, 55, 64, 65, 70, 75, 77, 80, 81, 84, 85, 90, 94, 95
The longest is I-90 at 3020 miles, and the shortest is I-77 at 610 miles. This network of long highways divides the area of the 48 contiguous states into 85 chunks of land, and this list shows the highest peak for each of these sections.
Note that for the purposes of this analysis, interstate highways that approach coastal areas are assumed to continue to the ocean for the purposes of dividing the regions. Also note that some of these areas, particularly near Chicago and Los Angeles, can be very small.
This list includes many high, popular and well-known peaks, including 15 state high points and an additional 53 county high points. Most of the remaining 16 peaks are quite obscure. Overall, it’s an interesting grab-bag of objectives.
