John Ide
February 19, 1947 - / December 4, 2018 - Carson City, NV
John, a legendary peakbagger and great friend, left his mark on many of the most prominent peaks of the Southwest and beyond. Always quick with a smile and to say yes to adventure, John took advantage on climbing peaks with a vast network of friends. He blazed the trail to the top, saying, “Don’t worry; I’ll wait for you up there,” and that he did. He was strong on the rope and encouraged others when they needed it to reach the summit. His biggest fault was that he could hike any distance, so if you rode with John, you likely parked further away than necessary, just to “stretch the legs a bit”.
In terms of sheer quantity, John completed the Great Basin Peaks List, the Last Vegas Mountaineers Classics, and over 90% of the P2ks in Nevada and California. He was a leader in chasing prominent peaks, amassing over 500 P2ks in his career.
John’s interests were not just in the mountains, as he excelled at bridge and enjoyed playing nearly any type of game. Easy conversations on long drives to peaks were had on a variety of topics from birds to literature and of course, mountaineering. He travelled the world, saw many sights, touched many lives. He will be missed.
