Ascent Trip ReportA pretty easy hike, and one that can be easily combined with the McMinn COHP (Starr Mountain) if you have a half day--the trailhead for Chestnut is literally on the way to it! This hike will net you a P1K, and is far more pleasant than the faint, brambly sufferfest that is the standard route up Starr...
I parked at Iron Gap in a large pullout area, where the signed and obvious Chestnut Mountain Trail starts. This climbs steeply for a few tenths of a mile, then levels out and continues a much more gradual climb over the next mile and a half or so. Where the trail finally starts to descend, near the summit, I headed left into the woods and reached the top in only a few minutes. Despite the large summit contour and gentle grades, high ground is pretty obvious, and in a small area with a few rocks too scattered to be called a cairn. I went a bit further but everything seemed to drop downhill. I returned the way I came. 90 minutes roundtrip, no views.
