Ascent Trip Report

After driving from Idaho to the trailhead we decided to sleep in the car and hike in the next morning because of the weather. We were planning a 3 day trip - day 1 set up camp past Dollar Lake about 7 miles in, day 2 summit and hike out on the 3rd day. All parking spots were taken plus many cars were parked on the sides of the road. This is a very popular hike, Borah Peak had no parking problems. We left after 6 the next morning knowing that afternoon storms were predicted. Got to our camp site around noon and just got our tarp up before the heavens opened up. The temp dropped to 40ish, hail and rain came pouring down in great quantities! As a side note we were able to help a young hiker trying to do the Peak in one day. He turned around when the storm hit, he had no gear except shorts, T-shirt, a small pack, water and snacks. When he got to us we got him under our tarp, got him out of his wet clothes and gave him some of our extra warm clothing. Quickly heated up some water for him as well. Hypothermia was starting to set in. After about an hour or so he was on his way back to his car dry and warm, we told him to put our stuff under our rental car. Just a reminder that weather can turn in the mountains quickly so be prepared for it. The next morning we were on the trail at 5am and had a great hike to the summit. The last 3/4 of a mile to the top is boulder hopping, not bad just slow. We thought about Anderson Pass as a shortcut back but we just went back the way we came through Gunsight Pass. I would not come up Anderson Pass, too steep with scree. We started to hear thunder and light hail started to fall as we were leaving the summit. The trip back to camp had some light hail and rain but nothing like the day before. The hike out the next day was under clear skies. This is a great hike with amazing views. Well worth the time and effort. Don’t rush this one, enjoy.
#42 for me and #2 for Kevin.
