Ascent Trip Report

Madeline and I climbed East Barndoor Hill as part of our semi-regular trip to the scenic and peaceful MacLean Game Refuge. After purchasing pre-hike goodies at the local Stop and Shop, we parked and set out across the open field on the paved access road at around 1:45 PM. We had made it no further than the woods line (just over 200 yards) when we noticed the temperature was dropping like crazy, from mild to downright chilly. We ripped off our packs and extracted our fleece tops and windbreakers. We then proceeded through the Refuge and up East Barndoor Hill, which is located at the opposite end from where we parked. Normally, our chosen summit beverage of iced tea is a most satisfying choice; however, the air was too chilly to enjoy it. We lingered a short time on the summit and enjoyed the limited view northwest to the Bushy Hill uplands in Granby before making a deliberate slog back to the car.
