Ascent Trip Report

Much easier than North Dome. Found a herd path down the west side of North Dome that got me about halfway to the col. Nothing on the descent was too tricky and I managed to find the col without having to cheat and use my GPS, one of my concerns going into the hike since the col is so narrow. Made my way up the mountain by taking a bearing, following it to a tree along that bearing, and taking another one. It was very slow going, but I eventually made it to the top. The canister was a bit harder to find than the one on North Dome, but it was still no big deal. While at the summit, two people caught up with me and already knew my name from the register on North Dome. When I told them of my plan to hike down and roadwalk for two miles, they told me that they would give me a ride if I hiked down with them. They were a bit slower than I was, but they were wearing shorts with no shoes, so totally understandable. Another nice thing about hiking down with them was that I no longer had to be as careful a navigator as I was before. Ken said that he had somewhere around 50 peaks left on his grid and he clearly knew what he was doing navigationally, so I pretty much just followed him checking occasionally. We were able to avoid the drainage valley, something I was slightly concerned about while planning this hike, and they drove me back when we got down. Huge thank you to them for saving me from a two-mile roadwalk.
