Ascent Trip Report

From my surprise arrival on the top of Mount Ballard, I decided to follow the ridge down to the saddle, then ascend Fissure. There was a bunch of cactus to go around at first, but the going go easy and included a little rock work, just class 2, though. There's a fence heading up Fissure, and it was hard to know which side to be on. I saw the large rift from which the peak gets its name and paralleled it on my way up. There were some moments of bushwhacking, but I made it. I was quite weathered from hiking Miller earlier today and starting this one in the late afternoon. But here I was at the top. I went on back down but tried to find a better way down the first pitch. I did not, and slipped in a way where I poked my fingers with dead cholla hidden under leaves and got about a dozen stabs in the knee. I pulled out what I could, then headed down to the saddle. I looked for the route to bypass Ballard and then began traversing it. It only lasted 30ft, then I lost it. It was a slippery side-slope bushwhack traverse and I regained some elevation on the far side just to get to the trail sooner. Maybe I misremembered other trip reports and they said to not go this way. Anyway, I guess I recommend going over Ballard. The way down was quick after that due to the steep downhill. It is easy to slide out on the dirt, though.
