Ascent Trip Report

I drove down from Phoenix this morning to hike the impressive Miller Peak. I came in from Sierra Vista and drove into Coronado National Memorial. The wall loomed to my left, but appeared to end somewhere along the southern edge of the park. The road up the pass was in great shape, but was very slow going with many switchbacks. At the top of the pass I geared up and set off across the road and onto the Crest Trail/Arizona Trail. The weather was cooler than I'd experienced in a few weeks and I loved it. There was a small breeze as I passed by a could barred up mine shafts. Once outside the memorial and into the wilderness, there was much more opportunity to find shade. The environment went in and out of the pine zone, but the other zone may have just been a burned zone. I felt like I was the only one out today, but after I made the turn on the short spur that goes to the summit, I encountered a man coming down. The top was a little marred by the fact that there were foundations for a building and the pit of a pit toilet still there. The views were incredible, though and it was probably in the 60Fs. I saw the blimp that I saw earlier floating over Sierra Vista now on the ground. I learned later that this is a radar detecting balloon that just looks like a blimp. It seemed very unique. On my way down I passed a woman headed up on the spur, a man lower in the forest, and a group of three down by the mine shafts. That was everybody I saw on the trail. When I got back it was in the mid 80Fs, hot, but not too bad considering.
