Ascent Trip ReportSee N Thunder report for my GPS route. This was part of the Hematoma Quad.
From the top of Lone Peak S, I backtracked a few hundred feet until finding a good way to drop down to the N. Then I could see a faint path that took an exposed but relatively straightforward route up Lone Peak proper. I expected to have a long but easy drop to the base of the mountain here, but tried to follow the trail that stays high on the ridge before dropping into Little Willow creek. Unfortunately I could only follow bits and pieces of it. On the other hand, I just took the creek bottom, and it is a beautiful canyon. I used the last of my water on top of Lone, so was very grateful for the spring at N40 deg, 30’ 58”, W 111 deg, 47’ 27”) – halfway across the trail that crosses bear canyon at about 8500”, it is the furthest S of three water sources.
After 10 hours of route finding, bushwhacking, climbing, and scrambling over exposed ridges, I was looking forward to a nice walk down. Unfortunately at this point I was getting close to being late for work, and man is the city a long way below you.
