Ascent Trip ReportFrom Hwy 199, I took Forest Road 17N27, then 18N08 out to the end of the road at the base of Wounded Knee Mtn, a total of 11 miles from Hwy 199. This side of the mtn had been clear cut many years ago, and the regrowth was mostly dense brush. A trail continued from the road end, but ended after several hundred feet. I bushwhacked up near-impenetrable brush for 10 min to open forest near the ridge of Wounded Knee Mtn. On the ridge was the trail Sean Casserly had described. After a quick visit to the summit of Wounded Knee Mtn (in trees with no view), I turned around and followed the trail along the ridge towards Broken Rib Mtn. Once out of the forest, the trail began to get indistinct. It disappeared at the base of a loose scree slope, which I traverse around on the south side. This was followed by a thin rocky ridge that went class 3 in places. The trail then appeared again coming in from the west. I followed it for a short time before it disappeared again, then hiked easy cross-country to the summit of Broken Rib Mtn. This mtn was a lot more interesting than Wounded Knee Mtn.
