Ascent Trip Report

After staying in Pittsburg to climb four other Hundred Highest Peaks, we summited the Baldfaces on the trip home. On the drive to Grafton Notch, we saw two moose. We decided to do the Table Rock loop on the way up, which was very scenic, but added a huge amount of time. The Table Rock cliff does provide a nice view of the notch itself, which can't be seen from either Baldpate peak. If you want to see this, you can avoid the arduous route up the Table Rock Trail by just going out and back from the upper junction with the AT. It adds a mile to the hike, but it is more time-efficient. The hike to West Baldpate is also time-consuming. After the initial moderate climb, the trail has to take an annoyingly long flat bypass around a western spur of the range. The ascent from the shelter to the summit of the west peak is quite steep and rough, but manageable. There are excellent views from the ledges just past the summit, although they are nothing compared to the views from East Peak. The hike between the two is very enjoyable. The descent from West Baldpate is pretty quick, and the walk across the flat col between the two is spectacular, with huge open ledges, alpine plants, and bogs. The climb up to East Baldpate is intensely steep, and reminded me of South Baldface in NH. The views from this peak are among the best in the Hundred Highest list.
