Ascent Trip Report

We couldn't fly into Fairweather today because the weather was too nice! The extreme heat wave in SE AK made the snow at the landing zone too soft and mushy, and our pilot Drake didn't want to risk landing where he might not be able to get out (or crash). Look up what happened to Brad Washburn on Lucania in 1937.

So today we did the popular hike up Ripinsky. Many people on the trail, and great views of the area. Very hot, though--we were pretty sweaty and miserable in the 80 degree or more weather. Our ascent route was the Ridge Trail from Young Road, a moderate hike on a good trail. We took the Piedad trail (and its West Link) down--this is extremely steep and should be avoided on the downhill if you have knee issues.

We hiked from our motel in Haines and dipped our toes in the ocean before hiking up, for a sea-level ascent.
