Ascent Trip ReportRosebud County, MT.
I've dreading doing this CoHP for years and it's good to finally get it off my back.
Options, options, options = do the loop including the Treasure CoHP, or just do it as a single stand alone county? Adam's or Edward's route? In the end I decided to do it stand alone using Adam's route. Off I went.
An early arrival at the starting point was immediate disappointment finding the access road negatively posted where Adam, started his hike. I usually track down owners but with it being too early to knock on doors I decided to blaze on. Remarkably the ranch road was in good shape, so, since my Mom was along for the drive we drove it one mile to a corral where at that point I hopped out and she went back to the main dirt road to read her book and wait for me there.
I followed Adam's line and made good time since there's remnants of a long gone logging road that's mostly grass now most of the way. Sure there were the randomly placed burnt up fallen trees from a past fire but the route moved well. A couple of barb wire fences had to be negotiated with the final one right below the final summit slope that Adam states is thick with brush and deadfall. Luckily I didn't have to mess with that crap since on both sides of the ridge I was on it looked thick. Staying true to the ridge bypassed all that mess and I soon popped out on top of a grassy, flattish summit area peppered with burnt up trees.
At the far end the highest burnt up scraggly tree was eventually (easily) located right on the highest point and the photo is now here on Peakbagger. You'll also now find a small cairn at its base built by yours truly.
I decended my ascent route and was horrified to find a pickup truck waiting on the dirt track just north of the 3764' spot elevation. That quickly turned into a non-event since the driver worked for the nearby mining company and was just checking on a nearby mine and thus no interest in me what-so-ever. Whew -
From there I did a slow off and on jog up the ranch road to the truck my Mom was waiting for me in which was parked where Adam, had stashed his truck years ago. 2 hours total time on this one but I fly in the hills.
