Ascent Trip ReportVisited the Sam's Point Area of Minnewaska SP Preserve which opened at 9AM. Follow the sign for Sam's Point out of Cragsmoor which is near Ellenville, NY. Paid $10 entry fee to park and make use of the preserve. Visited all 5 of the 2280 contour areas, all of which I consider contenders for the high point. Walked the carriage road north to the northern and largest area. Road gets you inside the contour. I thrashed though the brush (pigmy pitch pine with undergrowth) to the west, but I give the nod to the perceptible rise in the road slightly to the north of the 2289 x. Next I visited the three tiny contours to the west of Lake Maratanza. These are nothing more than the high points along the exposed and easily walked cliff edge that run N-S on the western edge of the plateau. All give views and I feel are real contenders. South of the southern of these I did a horrible bushwhack east. My GPS told me that I got inside the contour area about 100 feet north and a little east of the 2289 x. Took me 4 hours parking lot to parking lot. Estimate 3.5 miles rt and 250 feet of elevation gain.
