Ascent Trip ReportI first drove the dirt road (Linda Rd) to where the Maricopa Trail access spur juts from it, but I did not like the parking situation (i.e. lack of it), so I drove back and parked at the Kunasek Trailhead near where Linda Rd and 7th Street intersect.
I hiked the new Maricopa Trail east to where it drops into the valley with this peak and Apache Peak to the east. About ten minutes later, I found the rougher spur trail that leads to the summit.
This spur trail was in fine shape (loose rock) for most of the way up. Near the top, it made a hard left and went by an old mine shaft. I followed scanter paths up through the rocks and brush to the top. The memorial for young Sage was there, well tended and in good shape. I sat on nearby rocks and appreciated that he shared his summit with me for a few minutes.
Going back down, I followed what looked like a good trail to the saddle to the north. But from the saddle, I had no luck finding trails, so I went cross-country down the slopes back toward the trail. It was loose and brushy, but short. I probably should have retraced my original route. |
