Ascent Trip Report

This was a private hike with George Christiansen. First was Black. The last five miles of the road in were in good shape and any 2WD could make it. That quarter would need a HCV with a good size engine. The turning point for this last section is easy to spot. On the right side are a couple of abandoned (I think) trailer and several junk cars, one being Mercedes that was almost stuck out in the main road. We followed the HPS hiking instructions and had no problems. On the way in, we did bump 5990. It’s not on any list, but we decided to do it in case it is added. This was probably the most ducked route I’ve ever hiked. It would seem there was a duck ever 10 feet. We found a register and a directional BM on the summit.
Next was Chaparrosa. We decided to do the loop hike. The only difference is when we were northwest of peak 5490 we crossed country over 5490, then down and up to the summit. Although it was shorter, I don’t think it was any faster. The train was rough and it added gain. On the way down from Chaparrosa, we did 5315.
