Ascent Trip ReportAfter Black Mountain we decided to try Hog Mountain - it was a bit too warm for comfort, pushing the lower 90's by early afternoon. We started at a parking lot for the Pine Lake trail, which runs on the opposite side of where we were going. We crossed an unsigned gate (on public land) and went cross country up steep grassy slopes, occasionally finding animal trails to follow. Our pace slowed as the day heated up.
Eventually we crossed an unsigned barbed wire fence, finding an old ranch road which went up to summit. I spent about 10 seconds on the summit, it was too hot for comfort and I wanted to get back down so I could get in the air conditioned car. I mistakenly only brought 1 liter of powerade, and that was gone by the time I hit the summit. On descent I felt like I was overheating, and this was confirmed when it took 25 minutes for my pulse to drop under 100 after sitting in the car trying to cool off. Ugh!
