Ascent Trip ReportI bought a $500 Chinese moped for the island and drove up to Mount Tapochau following the paved roads towards capital hill, the when across from the passport office turn right and begin driving on dirt roads up to the trainlhead. Beware of the potholes, they are enormous and will swallow your moped. The road becomes to steep to ride as you approach the top and I had to “walk” my moped with full power to overcome the extreme grade. Eventually I made it to the trailhead and I bought a bottle of water and a coconut from a seller at the trailhead. The hike is short, just a long set of paved trails to the summit which is also paved and surrounded by lookout points when you can see nearly the entire island. There are interesting historical plaques at the to as well describing the battle of Saipan during World War 2. |
