Ascent Trip Report

Attempted an early season climb of Bird Ridge Overlook. The summit was covered by snow, and the ridge climbing to it appeared to be corniced. In between Bird Ridge Overlook and Bird Ridge Point, most of the ridge is snow free, but there is a short section of narrow ridge past the Point that was challenging, as there are cornices on one side and a steep drop on the other. This was easy to navigate in the morning, as I started at 7:00 AM, but as the day wore on the snow softened and I was concerned about wet snow slides. Part of my decision to turn back was to cross this narrow ridge early, before it became unstable in the sun.

Below the Point, the trail was completely overrun by hikers in the early afternoon. Everyone wanted a piece of the good weather!
