Ascent Trip ReportSummit of Magnificent Peak by standard route. High wind conditions (~40 mph gusts), light rain, and significant snow cover past Tucker Mountain. Started at 8:00 AM, and the snow remained rock solid all day.
Nothing noteworthy occurred until the false peak, beyond which point the north side of the ridge was covered with an icy crust beneath newly fallen spindrift. It was difficult to find solid footing, and I was unnerved by the steep drops (not really apparent on the topo map) on the north side. Strong gusts occasionally knocked me off balance and didn't inspire much confidence in delicate climbing. I eventually backed down from this route and down climbed the south face, which was mostly bare and moderately sloped. I then ascended the ridge again just after the narrow, exposed section, and then easily reached the summit. An ice ax was great for carving out steps in the impenetrable crust; crampons were also very helpful.
