Ascent Trip ReportI was not anxious to make the steep climb and bushwhack up Bald Rock Mountain, especially when I knew there was a road going all the way to the top. Unfortunately, that road is located behind an impressive stone and metal gate structure. There is an intercom box there and, although I was not optimistic about getting access, I figured it couldn't hurt to try, so I pushed the button on the intercom box. I was surprised that I got a message which even included the phone numbers of the owners. I called one of the numbers and a friendly man said he would have no problem letting me through the gate so I could drive to the top of Bald Rock Mountain, but he was not going to be home for three days. Of course, I could not wait around for that length of time, but I rearranged my highpointing itinerary so I could return when the landowner was home. Sure enough, when I returned three days later I was allowed through the gate and I met the owner of a beautiful mountain home with a fantastic view from his backyard. The gentleman is a retired doctor and, of course, he is quite protective of his mountain sanctuary, but he does not mind a few visitors. The road is paved all the way to the owner's house and this is not a short distance. From his home the road becomes dirt and it is a little rough in places, but passable for any passenger car. The road terminates at a communication tower complex with the highest point .12 air miles farther on an unmaintained trail. The actual highest point is on a narrow rocky ridge with a steep drop off each side and a magnificent 270 degree vista; probably the best summit view of any Alabama County highpoint. I found two benchmarks there, but both were not the traditional USGS brass disks. These were smaller silver disks. I am sorry not to mention the owner's name and phone number, but I did not want to damage the success of future visitors to this summit. Hopefully, the doctor will be home when you arrive and you will be granted access. If not, you will be able to get his phone number from the intercom message and call him for a future visit. Your only other option is a steep huff and puff up the side of the mountain someplace, which of course, is a purer way to bag this highpoint anyway. I guess I am turning into a wimp as I get older!
