Ascent Trip Report

The land for the Blount County highpoint is gated, but there is a road in the grass beside the gate that I did not feel comfortable using, so I parked my car and walked into the property, since my GPS indicated I was only 520 feet from the summit. There are some unusual structures in the area that makes it difficult to determine where the owner lives and I knocked on the wrong structure. Soon a lady, Tracy Martin, came out of another structure to find out what I wanted. She is an artist and was happy to have me wander around her property and see all her folk art. There are several unusual grave markers and interesting metal sculptures. The highest point seemed to be in the center of a cluster of folk art creations, although it looked like some large rocks nearby might be higher. My GPS indicated an elevation on the top of these rocks of 1538 feet, but in the center of the folk art cluster I got a reading of 1543 feet, so that spot must be higher, even though it is a flat area. There is a substantial lookout shelter that provides a fantastic view to the east, but there are several great vista points along the summit's edge. My favorite site was a wood heated hot tub built into the side of a cliff using glass blocks. It was a very clever creation. This was my favorite Alabama County highpoint and I will return with my wife someday to show her all the interesting folk art. I spent 1.25 hours here enjoying this unusual summit.
