Ascent Trip ReportWe wanted to continue our streak of venturing out on the weekends and this would be our 6th. As the Cascades were expected to get rained on most of the weekend along with increased avalanche danger, the Olympics were the only places with some choice. None of us had done Mt. Ellinor which happens to be one of the more accessible mountains in the peninsula.
We parked at the lower trailhead as the upper trailhead still remains inaccessible and started up the trail a little before 10. The hike up to the avalanche chute was pretty monotonous despite it being overcast and gray the whole time. The chute looked stable but the absence of any recent tracks meant that it’d be a lot more work than we anticipated. We sank up to the our knees in the chute but the consistent progress did make it possible for us to top it in about 2 hours at 1.45. As we made out way above the treeline, it got progressively windy and powdery. Enduring the cold, we sunk our way through to the top by 2.45.
Snapping some summit pictures and taking in some stiff Clif bars, we made our way down all the way to the trail assisted by some partial glissades by 4. The climb down was officially done at 5 after we escaped the monotony of the trail.
Despite the weather, the Cascades and the Olympics always have something up their sleeves. Never a dull moment.
