Ascent Trip Reportthe attached track is my drive in. i attached my hike over on the eugene sub peak.
i asked gmaps to take me to dennis poulin's trailhead, and it did an OK job, but it wanted me to start driving off-road on some rocky terrain that it was claiming was a road. fortunately i was also following SP directions and i just ignored gmaps error. if you stop where dennis did, then the worst part of the road is the lower portion of the canyon where water damage causes numerous ruts. i continued on past dennis' trailhead up to the saddle, this last leg of the road wasn't terrible, but it was the most rocky portion. i could probably have continued on to the radio shack, but i wanted the sub-peak.
one-way travel time from the interstate: 46 min.
i bagged eugene benchmark first, so that i wouldn't slack off after bagging the main course. it was excessively windy today, which detracted from my enjoyment of what would have otherwise been a very pleasant hike. i'm a big fan of ridge hikes with easy travel, and expansive views, and that's what this is.
it's worth mentioning that the trail dennis found on the way back allowed for rapid travel. i hadn't read his report close enough, or looked at the track, or i might have looked for it on my outbound. it's hard to find the end of the trail nearest the saddle where i parked. i was going to put a cairn on the road for the next hikers, but the trail just fizzled out when i got within 50' of the road. if you want to seek the trail on the outbound you're going to have to use dennis or my hike tracks: take a left where the trails fork a little way up toward the radio shack.
