Ascent Trip Report

Headed up from Clay Meadows trailhead. Met a guy who was coming down saying it was too icy, so he didn't keep going past the Fifth Peak lean to. I used spikes most of the way and fell twice. Found the lean to and the very rough "boulder stairs" to French Point (had to get on my butt, hands and knees to manage at points). Some parts of the trail were hard to follow, as there were turns not marked with trail markers. It was not easy on the slightly snow covered ice in many sections. Some mud/snow mix. Slow going. Found French Point and some other very beautiful scenic overlooks. I thought I was headed in the right direction to get to First Peak, as there was no junction marker and ended up just retracing my steps back to the trailhead, despite following written directions, compass and what was left of AllTrails power-it kept losing sight of First Peak on the map. I thought I missed First Peak, but later it was confirmed from my photos that I DID find it and was actually sitting right there. Everything I read said it was renowned for it's beautiful sights, and yeah, it's why I spent so much time there. Maybe the little sign is now missing?
