Ascent Trip ReportI decided to take the long way (6.8 RT) to this peak approaching it from Ricker Pond Campground on Rt 232 (Can also be approached via VAST Trail near Levi Pond). This afforded me two benefits. One, it being winter, parking is often a concern. Fortunately the driveway entering Ricker was plowed and there was a good parking. Second, I've always wanted to explore the northern side of Ricker Pond. I am familiar with it from my canoe. Ricker is one of my favorite drive-in family campgrounds. A few years a go we lucked out and rented a "historic" cabin/camp that is owned by the state and located at the southern end of the pond.
There is a walking path with a bridge from the campground to the northern end of Ricker - this path can is on the right heading north on the Cross Vermont Trail ( an old railroad bed) from the campground. There is a "No Unauthorized Access" sign. Not sure why. The path leads to a cluster of 4-5 camps on the northern end of the pond. I think it is the only access to these camps other than over the pond. From this area , it was a little dicey getting through a small stand of some thick spruce but after ascending out of the lowland area it got much easier in a predominantly hardwood forest. The route i chose was very easy and gradual leading to a small ridge leading up to the main peak of about 2,100 feet. This land is privately owned but not posted. Unfortunately, some rough clearing and road work seems to be beginning here and a route was flagged all the way to the summit. I'm guessing that someone is going to locate their country home on top of Jerry Lund and enjoy the view of Lake Groton, Peacham Bog and points west. I was very disappointed to see it and the despoiling of this rugged little peak.
If you enjoy the peaks in and around Groton I suggest you bag this one before it is posted and topped with a trophy home.
