Ascent Trip Report

You don't always make it to the top in life. Sometimes those are the journeys in which we can learn the most from.

This fine day in Nevada I drove from my friend Danny's place in Las Vegas to the Trail Canyon trailhead - which connects to the North Loop of Mt. Charleston (or, Old Charlie, as the locals call it). I had read in previous trip reports the North Loop has less snow accumulation and is a longer, but easier approach. I arrived at the trailhead only around 8:30am and began hiking around 9:00am, much later than my original plan. However I was quite tired from the travel the day before, and I figured I still had plenty of time in the day for the 17-mile roundtrip hike.

I could see the peak was heavily covered in snow. I know it rained a lot the week prior - meaning Charleston Peak would have received a lot of snow. The temperatures still have not been above freezing, so the snow stays put pretty late in the year.
