Ascent Trip Report

Forsyth County demolished the Jetson-style house atop Sawnee Mountain in November 2017, and what was a fenced summit is now accessible. Set your GPS for Tower Road, Cumming GA, and when you reach the ridge, turn left onto a street signed Barker Road (labeled on maps as Cunningham Point). The driveway is still gated with the forbidding signs that have been there for years, but the fence has been removed, and now that the house is gone, there's no reason to keep out. The land is now owned by Forsyth County.

The homesite has been leveled and seeded with grass, burying the natural highpoint. In fact, the ridgetop was excavated when the Barker House was built. The flying saucer atop the pedestal was actually only half of the house. There was also a second living area underground. Click here to see the plans and photos. When the house was removed, the observation tower was spared, and I am hopeful that it will eventually be open to the public. Even from the ground, the views are extraordinary looking north toward the Blue Ridge.
