Ascent Trip ReportBiked to Hard Luck campground then followed Buck Creek trail. Due to the deteriorating trail conditions, I left it early and headed up the ridge that terminates just to the east of White Mountain. Ridge was steep but not too brushy. After a break on White, I ascended Cobblestone. Once back at White Mountain's east/west ridge, I headed north then northwest down the slopes to regain the creek just upstream of Buck Creek campsite. Took 4.5 hours to hike down the creek and bike back to my car from the campsite. 12 hours in total with 18 miles of hiking, 7 miles of biking, and about 7.5k feet of combined gain.
After leaving Piru Creek, the Buck Creek trail is in good shape for first two miles or so as it contours mainly above Buck Creek on its southern side. After the trail descends back into the creek, it is pretty much non-existent. Pace slowed considerably with lots of bushwhacking through cat's claw, willows, and poison oak, and climbing over downed trees. Got poison oak rash from the bushwhacking. Took this route because I thought it would be faster than the long drive up and down Alamo Mountain Road, but not sure if that was the case due to the poor condition of Buck Creek trail.
