Ascent Trip Report

Attempted this hike on December 30th, 2017, but had a late start and had to come back down about a quarter of a mile from the summit of South Wolfpen Ridge, because it was starting to get dark and really cold. I was also woefully underprepared, underdressed, and was caught off guard at the time. I had underestimated how challenging the hike would have been, thinking it was only around 2 miles to the top. This time around, I was better prepared, and had my trekking poles with me. The poles definitely helped in distributing the load going up. Started at 180 spur, and took Jacks Knob North toward Brasstown Bald. Lots of switchbacks, I counted at least 40, with a section in the middle with back-to-back switchbacks. Great day for a hike. First warm and dry weekend we had in a while. Didn't see too many humans, and not a lot of wildlife apart from the birds. The flowers had not come out yet, probably because we've had all of these cold spells recently.
