Ascent Trip Report

This was a private hike with George Christiansen. All were Peakbagger bumps except Samuelsons, which is not on Peakbagger. We entered Joshua Tree National Park at the west entrance, drove to the Hidden Valley Campground. Shortly after turning into the campground, there was a pull off on the right
with a trail that led to two climber boulders. We hiked the short distance between the boulders to a single boulder that was about 4 feet off the ground. The benchmark was on this rock.
Next was Samuelsons and 4313. We drove back Park Blvd. about 1 ½ miles and parked. We then hike due west across the desert floor about 1 ½ miles to Samuelsons Rock. It a pile of rocks that rises about 50’ off the desert floor. There was a use trail that goes up to the summit of Samuelsons where we found two rocks inscribed with sayings by Samuelsons in the 1920’s. We also found a bed spring.
From Samuelsons, we hiked down and around a corral to a northeast ridge to the summit of 4313, where we found a wooden stake and some wire. No register or BM.
From 4313, we hiked down an east ridge and back across the desert floor to the car. From there we drove about 2 miles to a pullout on the left. A trail starts at pullout, goes west about 1/3 mile drops into a wash turns left and goes south about a ¼ mile. From there we started southwest towards the summit. We were following James Barlow’s track. Unfortunately, we went a little to the right of his track and found ourselves in a bunch of boulders before we managed to drop into a gully then up to the summit. On the summit we found a piece of wire that someone had shaped into a Joshua tree. No register or BM. We returned down the gully to the trail and back to the car.
Next was 4627. From the same parking spot we headed east across the desert floor, dropping into a wash that leads to the saddle between 4627 and 4508. We left the wash before the saddle and went up a gully towards what we thought was the summit. Turns out we were wrong. After boulder hopping, we realized we where headed to a false summit. We then had to drop down and around the false summit to a point where we found a clear path to the summit. We found no register or BM. From the summit, we saw a better path down towards what looked like fence posts but were actually some Joshua trees. We headed west down towards the trees. It was a much better route down then up. We were going to do 4508 but ran out of time and energy. We did scope out a possible route to 4508.
Back in the car we headed a short distance to a spot due south of 4174. We parked and hiked the short distance to this peak. Other than some unusual rock cairns, we found no register or BM.
