Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club Outing***
led by Mat Kelliher, Ron Hudson, Paul Garry, Anne Mullins
The first thing I did when I got to the Chili Cookoff Saturday evening was find someone to take over for Bill Simpson. Paul Garry and Anne Mullins stepped right up and agreed to help, right after they did so Ron Hudson, who I'd asked earlier agreed to help out too, so we had plenty of talent on hand to fill in for Bill.
We drove in via the DPS "Southern Approach". This route in is in excellent condition. SR 178 is paved, and after traveling west on it for 5.7 miles the route calls for a right turn at milepost 37.00 onto the dirt Greenwater Valley Road. Greenwater Valley Road is in excellent condition, all 10.0 miles of it up to the turnoff for Deadman Pass, so excellent that I think probably did 50 miles an hour on it. The road to Deadman Pass requires high clearance in a few places, but it's also in excellent shape. When we were finished with the hike, the road is in such good shape that I just followed Paul and Anne north on it to its intersection with Hwy 127, and then worked my way through the Park to Trona, then Ridgecrest and Hwy 14, totally avoiding the I-15 Las Vegas traffic crush.
Brown Peak was an excellent hike, and we got there following the standard DPS route from the west. The route makes sense, when it gets up onto rocky terrain its mostly excellent sticky rock, with minor loose section while ascending western ridge a couple of hundred feet or so below the flattish summit ridge area. Superb views up top, we came out essentially the same way we came in except we chose to walk around the north side of the hill NW of Pk 3882 rather than go up the little saddle system to its south like we did coming in.
