Ascent Trip Report

Entered 3/17/2018. This hike was done with Outdoor Pursuits Fall 2017.

We drove up the night before and car camped at Lafayette Campground. The next morning we ate breakfast (bagels and cream cheese) and began hiking, leaving the cars at the Lafayette Campsite parking lot. Passed under I-93 using a concrete tunnel built primarily for foot traffic. We hiked about 3.3 miles to Little Haystack Mountain via the Falling Waters Trail. Steep near the summit of Little Haystack. Stopped briefly and continued along the Franconia Ridge Trail. The views were amazing the entire way with no tree cover of course and great weather. I forget if we could see as far as Mt. Washington or not but I remember seeing the Bonds. We made it to the summit of Mount Lincoln, Mount Fake News (Truman) (credit to Norman Walker), and finally Mount Lafayette. Crowds were relatively minimal but we encountered more people along Franconia ridge. There were lots of people at the summit of Little Haystack.

We spent about 30 minutes on the summit of Lafayette until we began to descend on the Greenleaf Trail. We stopped briefly at the Greenleaf Hut which was closed. We finished the last 3.0 miles of the loop on the Old Bridle Path. It got dark when the trial began to get steep. Ended the hike in the dark.
