Ascent Trip Report

This is arguably the easiest way to bag Mount Wilson in Red Rock Canyon NCA. The other routes from the east require a lot of extreme scrambling up First Creek or Oak Creek with plenty of exposure on the way. This route is maybe a little longer but has less elevation gain over all and a lot less scrambling. You have to drive up a Forest Road in Lovell Canyon to the end of the road with a small area to park a few cars. From there the route follows an old gravel road which disappears into a wash. Following the wash up you must take a small wash forking off to the right. Check the GPS track to follow this route. You basically follow this route up until it ends on a small rounded ridge with a use trail on it. Follow the trail to the main limestone ridgeline. Do not follow the ascent route on the GPS track at this point. On the descent we found a small cairned trail on the north side of First Creek Overlook Peak (prov). This was by far the easiest route. So, once reaching the top of the ridge follow it north until you see a cairn with a steep scree slope. This is the route down. It doesn't look good at this point but it does get much better. Follow my descent track and you should be able to find a small cairned use trail which just skirts First Creek Overlook Peak to the north. Follow the small trail until you reach the main saddle. From here you can follow use trails along the top of the saddle until you reach the sandstone. Once on the sandstone there is a cairned route to the summit.
