Ascent Trip ReportA call to the Coronado Forest rangers confirmed that the road was open to the winter gate at 9100’, and we had no trouble driving the winding AZ route 366 to that point. Snow was visible on the peak from the valley below, and we encountered patches on the hike starting at about 9800’. Above 10400’, the last mile was all on snow, including some post-holing up to the summit area. Boots and poles were all we needed, however. The mountain burned severely in the 2017 Frye fire and there are dead trees everywhere, making for dramatic but rather monotonous surroundings.
In spite of changeable forecasts we had beautiful weather and light winds. Other than a family playing in the snow at the trailhead, we saw no one else all day.
