Ascent Trip ReportMine Peak is another interesting place to visit. We decided to drive on Interstate 8 out to Ocotillo and take the S2 to mile 53.6 and turn right or east onto West Dolomite Mine Road. At about 0.7 mile go left and go as far up the road to the mine as you can. There are a few nice places to park if the road is in bad shape. We were able to take a 2 wheel drive truck all the way to the mine. This is a short trip from the mine to the peak and there could be some really fun rock hop/scrambles like the drainage on the left or north side of the mine but with Kim's recovery we decided to walk up the road above the mine and get on the ridge. We looked at Keith Winston's GPS track and decided to take that route. It turned out to be an excellent route up to the peak. There were a few ducks/cairns along the way. It was interesting at one point in a small saddle between the ridge and the peak we noticed a small area that recently had a pond of course this is probably only after a heavy rain like thunderstorm but the ground was definitely checked and you could see that it held water. Man o man, these desert peaks are so interesting. The summit has a small pile of rocks to climb on and there is a steel fence post sticking out of them and a small double coffee can register. The views are absolutely beautiful. Another beautiful day on a peak with Kim. |
