Ascent Trip ReportWe enjoyed a great hike of Ampersand - perfect conditions with just a light dusting of snow (2 inches) over crispy hardpack for the first 1.5 miles. From here the topo picks up a bit and then after a short flat the real up begins. In the summer months this steep part is rock stairs, in February its ice and snow and a lot of sliding - all is good with a little planning and careful footing. The last 0.3 is through the "rock garden" and is one of the best parts of the hike. the 2.7 miles up consists of ~1900' of gain and within 1H 45m we were at the summit in swirling clouds and biting winds. It was a quick shot down in 1H 15m and then onto Baker as it was still early. |
