Ascent Trip ReportAs mentioned elsewhere, be sure to obtain permits for everyone in your party before this trip.
We approached this a bit differently than most, as we were coming from the Pinta Benchmark hike/trailhead. From there, we drove north to the next emergency beacon (about 15 miles) which was also the next major intersection. We then headed west on a very good road, which eventually swung around to the north and then northwest to parallel the Mohawk Range. As it headed north in got increasingly unpleasant, but not unsafe, so it did eat considerable time (about 2 hours from trailhead to trailhead). Ironically, the faint tire tracks heading east from the main road and then even the desert without tracks was considerably easier driving than the main (northwest-southeast) "road".
After the hike when we headed north, but we missed a turn to the west which would have put us on what appears to be a better parallel road, but eventually we reached an opportunity to get on I-8 eastbound only about a mile before exit 54.
The hike itself was not easy, but I actually really enjoyed it. The terrain, while not great, was better than what we experienced on nearby Sheep or Pinta. Also, staying left (north) and above the wash when you first ascend the canyon is enormously helpful- some decent sheep trails are there. Up high, there is way too much cholla!
