Ascent Trip ReportAnother, standing, fire lookout tower was our goal for the day. Snow levels are high so it seemed reasonable enough. The Ueland Tree Farm owns most of the approach and they allow hiking etc on their lands. We'd done our math and although not appearing too complex there was a fair amount of unknown.
We hit the Chico trail head around 11 or so. Many families and other hikers were there. The trial or the road are easy hiking for a few miles. Once on logging spur U1800 it gains a little elevation. A single fork made us question but then we were back on track. The righthand bend where Willhite goes crosscountry is no longer a good option. We headed into the thrash at this point but it is a mess. Clear cut which is several years old goes on as far as the eye can see. Ugly, chest high ferns hiding broken logs which are thigh suckers, and briars, and just crap... We turned back and then continued up the old logging road. It goes well beyond where it is marked on maps. Circling around to the east we found flagging in the trees. We followed this for a while and came again to clear cut. This cut wasn't nearly as bad as the first but discouraging enough for my companion. It was at least another 1/2 mile from that point.
After the fact we circled around to the south to scout a route from that aspect. Maps show roads nearly to the top. Locked gates with "closed watershed' signs at every entrance.
Maybe next time.
