Ascent Trip Report

Winter storm warning in effect. Took 79 & S2 from Santa Ysabel to avoid the expected snow/frozen roads of Julian and Banner grade (didn't materialize). Drove in a ways to meet up with part of the group that camped overnight. Then carpooled up to the trailhead. Some light rain showers passing thru with rainbows at the start. Headed up Cool Canyon about 7:45am; ran into a group of remote control (small) car enthusiasts that were driving their Jeeps up the canyon. I wondered how long the batteries lasted...
There are many interesting dry waterfalls, none are too difficult. We eventually took a south fork route which featured much bigger and harder dry waterfalls. Part of the group then ascended the ridge while the other part went a couple more big dry waterfalls before merging along the ascending ridge. Took a brief break at the base of a large boulder field just below peak 4624. Decided to head west to the main ridge then up to the peak; our descent route was more to the east (and easier). Halfway up the snow started. Off and on with the passing clouds. Big storm clouds hit on each side of us but somehow we were spared the heavy stuff. The ascent just happened to be on the leeward side of the weather so for the most part sheltered from the high winds. But got a quick reminder on exposed ridges and rocks. There are many ducked routes. One group took an approach route up the east side; which all took down. My group took a ducked approach route on the west side which was neat adventure and scrambling (no exposure). However the winds on the summit block were 40+ mph. some almost got knocked off with gusts. hands got frozen quick so didn't get many photos on top. Returned the same route. Larry got lost (had radio contact) and eventually made his way back to the trailhead via S2/Box Canyon (hitchhiking).

Stats include all breaks/stops.
