Ascent Trip Report

I looked at various approaches for this peak. As far as I could tell, there is only a strip of public land from the top down to the NW. So I intended to come in from the NW. First I tried coming up out of Central City (between Lead and Deadwood) on a road that goes west up into that area. I got only a little ways before the plowing ended. So then I went around up into the Terry Peak area on the Nevada Gulch road. I went through the Trojan area through where Wharf Resources is mining in the area. Once past the mining area there are a few private homes and a road that headed back toward the peak. I skied up that road a short ways and there was a gate and a no trespassing sign. So finally I ended up going back and parking on the Nevada Gulch road just across from the lower ski area parking and just down from where the mining ends. That put me less than 1/3 mile from and South of the peak. But it's very steep. I quickly abandoned my skis and just postholed up in my ski boots. This was not much of a wilderness experience. You can hear skiers across the valley and Wharf Mining trucks backing up. Every so often, a whistle blows and there's an explosion. Thankfully, it's a quick hike. Fairly nice views from the top.
