Ascent Trip ReportMy plan was to approach this summit from a jump off point north on Rice Tract Road. Great plan that was off the track the moment i approached Rice Tract Road from 12A in Roxbury and Oxbow Road. Oxbow is not a thru road at least in the winter. SO I parked my car and donned microspikes - the snow was packed solid and icy and headed up Oxbow Road. For some reason I elected to get off Rice Tract Road and utilize West Hill Road (there is some nice dirt road walking in this area. There's a house at the end of West Hill Road - I checked for permission (its not posted) and launched off into their fields picking up a series of logging roads that took me at least a mile deep into the woods. This is not a bad approach - it climbs easily and gradually but there is a col prior to the relatively long final ascent. All of this might of been fine except for the postholing I did about every 10 steps - exhausting. I'll always take my shoes if in doubt in the future.
Rice has a very cool summit with some great views to the south and east just below. There is a canister and someone had been there the day before - on snowshoes!
