Ascent Trip ReportGenerally followed Dmitry Medvedev's GPX track starting from Kings Beach. Beaver Street hadn't been plowed, so I parked about half a mile away at the corner of Cutthroat and Coon in the parking lot for two giant metal sheds, perhaps used for boat storage. Oddly, there was no signage for the business and, importantly, no "No Parking" signs.
After returning to the trailhead, the first mile and a half was on a flat Forest Service road (16N86) that had been chewed up by snowmobiles. After leaving the road, I put on snowshoes and, following the power lines, climbed steeply up to the south ridge and from there to the top. The snow was deep, champagne powder, probably better for skis than snowshoes. No one had been on this route since the last snowfall and I had to break trail, which became pretty exhausting. Suffered occasional post-holing, particularly in the brushy sections.
After reaching the summit, I took the west ridge out to the Placer County highpoint and then traversed back to the south ridge. On the way down, had to stop for a few minutes to work out an inner thigh cramp and pop a few Advils. Seems to always happen when I snowshoe.
About 9 miles; 3,200 feet gain. 7h15.
