Ascent Trip ReportStanding near the summit on mont Bleu, I had only a few tens of meters to cover to grab this high point. Following the cleared support cable swath at the base of the aerial, I went a bit further than the bottom, into the trees, before backtracking to the summit. From there, I kept my snowshoes on in expectation of the shortcut under the powerline I had spotted on the way up. The plowed road along the ridge was covered in wind drift anyway and when I was back on the weather slopes, I didn't have long to hike on the road.
When I went over the snowbank and down into the snowmobile trail, I found it quite stable and I didn't sink in much. It made for an easy shortcut and i was quickly back on the road. I removed my snowshoes and kept going. When I reached the gate for the driveway at log cabin near lac Simard, I found it closed and my footsteps were smudged by tire tracks. At the upper gate on the road, I was surprised to find it closed and locked too. I was glad to have chosen to park near the highway as I wondered if even the first gate would be closed when I got there.
The whole descent was uneventful and when I finally reached the trailhead, I saw that the first gate was still open although I have no idea if it gets locked sometimes. My advice is to park near the road. As I packed, I pondered on my will to try and grab mont Deux Mille. In the car, I didn't think twice and turned left on HWY 289, heading for the next summit.
